Songs We Sing (03.12.2017)

When we sing together, we are corporately singing the praises of our God. It’s a participatory activity. This “Songs We Sing” post is a weekly effort to help us better learn the songs we are singing — as well as to gather some small insight into what we are singing. If you’d like a copy of the songs listed, a link is provided (where available). For the services of March 12, 2017, Redemption bands Always At The Ready (in Jasper) and At One (in Loogootee) led music and we sang:

HOW GREAT IS OUR GOD
Written by Chris Tomlin, Ed Cash, Jesse Reeves, 2004. This very popular worship song (one of the most popular since the mid-2000s) is a simple song of praise to our great God (“the name above all names/worthy of all praise”).
Buy “How Great Is Our God” by Chris Tomlin.

HALLELUJAH WHAT A SAVIOR
Written by Philip Paul Bliss and Tommy Walker, 2004. Based on the old hymn “Man of Sorrows, What A Name,” this updated version adds a chorus but sticks to the theme of going through the gospel and adding praise to God for his mercy towards us.
Buy “Hallelujah What A Savior” by Austin Stone Worship (feat. Aaron Ivey).

LIFT YOUR HEAD WEARY SINNER (CHAINS)
Written by David Crowder, Ed Cash. Seth Philpott; 2014. This “stomp” song is an anthem for all of us as “prodigals” stumbling towards grace. The chains of sin can no longer hold us as Jesus has wiped away all our sins and broken the bondage of sin.
Buy “Lift Your Head Weary Sinner (Chains)” by Crowder.

THE LOVE OF GOD
Written by Frederick M. Lehman, Meir Ben Isaac Nehorai; 1917 (Arrangement by MercyMe). No matter how often we sing it or say it or write it, nothing can describe the love of God for us.
Buy “The Love Of God” by MercyMe.

GIVE US CLEAN HANDS
Written by Charlie Hall, 2000. This is a good song of repentance and one that we need to pray more often.
Buy “Give Us Clean Hands” by Kutless.

RISEN
Written by Daniel Ross, Andrew Kieffner; 2013. Inspired by I Corinthians 15:50-58, this song is intended to be a rousing anthem that believers can sing with confidence because, if Jesus is risen, we have hope!
